Nice idea and execution. The app however forced me to reset my Google password after signing in from a new device. Huge inconvenience. Also, commercials play Much louder than the rest of the content, forcing you to stay by your volume controls. Would be nice if there was a premium subscription version available. I’d be willing to pay up $4.99/month for no ads. Work out the kinks and and address the ad issue and you legitimately have a 5-star app on your hands
We’ve starred several #topics and @people in Haystack on our Android TV. These used to be displayed as a list on the left side of the main Haystack screen. I’d love to get them back there. That was our preferred mode of navigation. Now we have to go to Search to access them. I don’t know if there’s a configuration I can’t find or if the app doesn’t support that anymore.
It is a good organization of what I like to get news about, but I only have one or two times a week that I ha e time to catch the news. So, during that time buffering is out of line. To be able to set the high definition quality to a lower setting could remedy that, but it is not an option. And predownloading my headlines is only done using Wi-Fi witch I am never on therefore not an option for me either.
Great idea, but buffers constantly. I haven’t been able to get through 1 news story without constantly being interrupted. I tried both WiFi and cell service multiple times and locations. YouTube tv (live programming as well as recorded shows) and Netflix do not have this problem. I will change my rating if you can fix this app.
Used to be great. Haystack has been my main source of news for the last few years, I have always liked how the news would be aligned with my preference and how up to date they were. In the last months I started seeing a lot of repetition of news that i have seen before and less of a good mix of sources and videos. For example, what triggered me to write this review is because I was just presented with the same video its being showed to me for tge last two weeks everery day.
Please please fix the stopping video bug. Not sure what happened, used to be flawless, loved it even with the stories not being updated frequently but now I can’t even use it. The videos keep stopping, won’t restart, pain in the butt. Uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. Says there was a bug fix for this, nope not for the s10 plus, at least not mine. Fix and will change rating. Very annoying!!!!!
Informative App. I like it because I can catch the news anytime, anywhere. Plus you can adjust what your favorite subjects are by marking them. If there is a subject you don’t like just uncheck the star next to that subject. Some local news channels are based off your location. I can watch news on my phone or my roku stick.
I recently bought a hisense 65h9f android tv that includes this app. Excellent I’m a news hound. Before paying for a subscription I tried it out for a while. According to to pop up add pushing for the sub it says to turn off the ads sign up. I have no problem paying for a useful service. Here’s the thing. Since 1st using it, it has been showing the same 10 video clips every once in a while 1 will change out. Along with advertisements. It gives far less then Google or MSN news. Which are free.
Needlessly inefficient. Selection is pretty good, and I enjoy the ability to watch just the items I want. But I want to efficiently and permanently prune down lists of things to watch. If I watched an item on phone or tablet or roku, don’t show that item on any device ever again. If I swipe away an item off a list, that means I don’t want to watch it ever. But if I go to a different category, the swiped away item will be back. Even worse items from a couple days ago will often reappear.
I like the variety of news available, but I wish I could get BBC. Ofter the volume of commercials is too high, it’s disturbing. They could also do a better job cutting between stories, the transition is often abrupt and the experience jarring. I think it’s important to include news from multiple sources, this is a great service.
Just downloaded it now about to delete it! I thought this would be news stations playing while segment, not just 2 minute videos ! That should be said in your Explanation of your service ! Sometimes it cuts off the whole story all together! Hey suckered again into getting a service that dosen’t explain itself thurly! Wake me up when you can play at least the whole story !
Good catch up after a few days of missing news. I don’t think they update the snips they use often enough, so you’ll see the same reports the next day. Weather can be a bit behind. The ability to choose many different network sources for news, business, sports and local is a definate plus. Commercials are not too obtrusive.
Have this on my Android TV. It has potential to be awesome. Yet, it’s not quite there yet. The news bar at the bottom is nice, though I wish it could be customized more or even hidden. Most disturbingly though, sometimes I am shown old clips. Today, 2 days after US election, I saw news clips that were still pre-election. For current events where things are changing rapedly, clips over 30 min to 2 hours old should not be shown, depending on the issue. Update: now need to re-sign in every time! 0*
If only the app wouldn’t be so buggy in Samsung split screen view (s10+), it would be perfect for those that like to have the news on in the background. In split screen view, the videos either don’t play, turn black, or jump around. And if you get a video to work resizing or focusing off the window screws everything up again. As a standalone app, not too shabby. Unfortunately, that’s not my use case.
The inability to use closed captions is a huge negative. They allow it during the ads you have to watch, but not on the content you downloaded the program for. Seems like a lazy programming problem. UPDATE After awhile they really up the amount of ads you have to watch. I think they expect that people will get annoyed enough to pay $4.99 a month… For an ap that just gives links to other people’s content.. UPDATE 2:. Their apparent fix to the above problem is to just stop captions on the ADs.
You can not get the app to stop sending you entertainment and sports news. I have down-thumbed those stories every time, I have NOT clicked that as an interest, yet, every 10 minutes, i get more entertainment and sports stories. HOW TO STOP THAT??? Otherwise, I like this app a lot and it acts differently on different types of TVs or phones or laptops. On some TVs i get offered a list for late night TV, but not on my other Tvs. odd. But i very much DO like being able to get the news from other sources besides the cable news channels. And i like that international news is offered. I do wish the late night option was offered on Every tv set i have.
I only wish there were more options, and quicker updates. Otherwise, it is the best damn news app I’ve ever seen. Although, I really hate the new ticker. That’s just annoying as hell, for anyone who has OCD and/or ADHD. And it just repeats the same things all the time anyway, distracting me from watching the video, and sometimes covering up running headlines at the bottom of the screen.
This app gives me a good menu of headlines news of the MSM any time of the day. However, I recently noticed that the Roku version does censor any video critical to China. You will see the title, the video, and hear background noises, but you won’t hear the voice. Very bizarre. Other that, this app gives you what is expected from the MSM.
This is a very good app, but they stated the premium version is commercial free. After signing up for the premium version, however; I was still getting as many commercials as before. I reached out several times with no response and out of total frustration, I finally cancelled the premium subscription. If you want a good news agitator and do not mind LOTS of commercials, use the free version.
Great app for a variety of news that viewers can use. It is top rate in my book. Good delivery and informative.
It’s a good app. Just no close captions for the stories. I received a notification that CC is available on the streaming app. But not true. Sad to say
5 words: “WE WILL BE BACK SHORTLY”. I see this more than commercials and the news which is why I downloaded the app. Finding another way to watch local news!
Update 7/6/22 I had the live news open on the Google chrome app and on my phone at the same time to see if it’s just the phone app, but it’s not☹️. Phone came on 30 sec before TV. Still cutting into newscast. At first it was 5 stars, but recently when watching live local news, this “we will be back shortly” wheel comes on after the commercials and by the time the news comes back, they’re on weather and going to break. It only happens on live local, which is why it’s 3 stars and not 1!
Always excellent quality video and can be relied on for a more interesting mix than a lot of other news apps
Haystack news is quite simply the very best in it’s class. I love the generous mixture of different news commentators and the savory blend of international and local news. For some reason I receive the Rhode Island local news instead of Massachusetts. I enjoy the variation on a theme. Keep up the good work people!
The Roku format seems to be a little more organized in a sense that the column on the very left denotes the type of news and then everything that subject follows from the right it seems that I’ve seen a couple versions of the app where that was not as prevalent or obvious?
Beyond my imagination . It is a great idea to give some thing to world,. Better to include BBC, CNN,FOX news , sports channel as wel .I am so grateful to this app
I am impressed by this app. Especially since the BBC failed to deliver no news except Queen Elizabeth 2 repeats on up to four news channels at the same time all day and evening during the last 2.5 weeks. If I wanted to find out anything else (Ukraine?) This app was a boon. Mind you it has the usual American bias and shouted volume. I wish I could find any readable instructions to set up my own news requirements on the app
It’s pretty good. Sometimes I just think it’s tough to make it refresh to today’s news and I’m stopped watching from yesterday
Ads are in the wrong language (Chinese and Spanish in the Bay Area). Personalization is not that great, it still takes a lot of browsing to find the stories I care about. I also wish there were a wider selection of news sources. Update: Personalization got better, but the app (both on the phone and TV) became very slow. It often takes 30+ seconds for the next story to play. Also, the TV app now often freezes for a minute or two.
First time I used it was on a fire stick and truthfully I had no faith, but after about two minutes in while picking what was right for me., I had to pee really bad. After peeing I realized why, IT turns out I was sitting there for five hours. Watching and clicking, then ouldn’t go to bed cause I wanted more, And its the same thing to this day!! BUT NOW, I even got it on my phone . Absolutely love it. only thing missing is the ❗ADDICTION WARNING❗ jk. Thanks Heystack. Truly wonderful.

This is ok but I can’t cast to my smart tv and there’s no button for casting and no live sport channels I want to see if all the local channels news and sport channels in one app.
This app is so awesome ! I love how it organizes different headlines in 2 to 4 minutes of each headlines and towards the end gives you stories of things you interest as you first open the app it gives you options to click on. For example #entertainment #trump #weather #local #international. And it also has live TV where can watch the news channel like live. In 20-to 30 minutes I am up to date on the news vs wasting hours watching the news. I high reccomend

Love this app! But it is flawed, especially in Canada with insufficient choice for Canadian news. Google still gives security warnings for information sharing with this app. In-app poll questions are cute, but lean a bit to the right and could be misleading due to extremely low sample sizes as well as other sampling errors.
It is always so cool. I have it on my Roku, with it’s screen saver, so it’s always giving me stories. With the ap, I have that, I see the stories, and choose what I want to see.
I like being able to easily find what’s happening BUT, it gives me more of what i choose at the moment. So on mist of sources i chose CNN and fox. But whichever i watch first determines the list. Maybe doing something wrong?
